For a more resilient world, promote women's leadership: expert

Understanding better how women are affected by disasters, economic shocks and other crises is key to helping their communities ride out pressures including climate change, a top resilience expert says.

But putting them in the driver's seat to deal with the problems is equally crucial, she said.

Sundaa Bridgett-Jones, senior associate director with The Rockefeller Foundation, said women are often resourceful in finding ways for their families to bounce back from disasters.

In the Bima and Dompu districts of West Nusa Tenggara Province, dealing with moneylenders is a plight smallholder corn farmers face on a regular basis. The farmers do not have many options to address their financial problems, especially when they are desperately in need of cash to start preparing their land for planting season and have to purchase fertilizer, or to fulfil their daily needs when they face crop failure in times of drought.

The importance of gender integration for climate change impacts

Climate change impacts affect men and women differently. Extreme weather events—such as droughts, floods, crop failure, disease outbreaks, and other climate impacts—threaten the resilience of communities, especially those who are economically weak. Climate change is not gender neutral and different social groups feel the impact differently, especially those who are vulnerable and less empowered.

Gender equality at COP21

After a year working intensively in one of our campaigns promoting inclusive Urban Climate Change Resilience (UCCR) in Indonesia, Mercy Corps Indonesia together with the Indonesian Municipalities Association (APEKSI), the Center for Regional Research and Information (PATTIRO), and the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection (KPPPA) has succeeded in developing a national guideline for integrating gender with Climate Change Adaptation. This guideline provides information that enables government agencies to understand the importance and direction of integrating gender and to apply gender equality and social inclusion approach into Urban Climate Change Resilience programs.
