It is becoming more and more obvious to urban dwellers in Vietnam, especially during the last ten years, that they are facing ever-increasing risks from the impacts of climate change. Vulnerability to climate change is not merely a matter of numbers and figures in the World Bank’s reports, but can be felt acutely in many cases by local Vietnamese people, such as in the devastation caused by intensified and out-of-season floods, droughts, and storms on people’s lives and livelihoods.


Intercropping, a climate change adaptation initiative in the Philippines

The City Veterinary and Agricultural Services (OCVAS) of Batangas City in collaboration with the East West Seed Co. have introduced intercropping method in the Pinamucan area of Batangas. This multiple cropping practice involves growing two or more crops in close proximity. Farmers can assess crop suitability through this practice. Irrigation is a challenge for farming in Pinamucan because of its geographic location and hilly terrain. Intercropping enables farmers to choose and cultivate crops that can give higher yields, allowing them to adapt to the local climatic conditions and increase their incomes.


Banjir Kanal Timur in Semarang City and the Problems to Deal With

According to a survey of some parts of the Banjir Kanal Timur (East Flood Canal) area in Semarang City, there are several findings that are considered to be problems. The situation has become difficult because of the rapid urbanization that has the impact of increasing the needs for infrastructure because of the pressure of increasing population and its domino effect on the environment. Some of the visible problems in the area include slums and squatters and the lack of open space.


Promoting a cool roof and passive ventilation concepts for indoor temperature comfort in India

Cool roofing is one such technology that is becoming popular in developed countries. India had a tradition of whitewashing/ white tiled flooring of the roofs and walls, especially in desert regions. A variety of cost effective options are available in the market ranging from simple lime wash with adhesives to polyurethane based insulation materials. This low tech options combined with the improved ventilation can improve indoor comfort for all sections of the society.


Searching for skyscrapers: preliminary meetings for collaborative research in Vientiane, Lao PDR

In July 2016, I had the opportunity to accompany Daniel Hayward, a researcher based out of the Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development at Chiang Mai University, on a trip to the capital of Lao PDR, Vientiane. Our goal for the trip was to meet with several potential research partners in the hopes of collaborating on an Urban Climate Resilience in Southeast Asia (URCSEA) research project on urban land governance in Vientiane.
