The World Environment Day is a vehicle used by the United Nations to promote worldwide awareness of the environment. Each year, the World Environment Day (WED) is organized around a theme on an environmental issue. In 2017, the theme is ‘Connecting People to Nature’. Its goal is to invite the audience to think about its interdependence with nature.


How half a degree will impact the future?

The Paris Climate Conference last December, set the highly ambitious and universal long-term global goal to keep warming not just “well below 2 degree Celsius” but also “to pursue efforts” to limit the average world temperature rise to 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial (late 19th century) levels. This raises the critical question: How dramatic will the impacts be for an additional half degree rise? And, who will face the consequences?


U.S. Withdrawal from Paris Climate Deal

President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that the US is withdrawing from the 2015 Paris climate agreement. Trump claimed the agreement would cost the US $3 trillion in lost GDP and 6.5 million jobs - while rival economies like China and India were treated more favorably. The Paris agreement was intended to bind the world community into battling rising global temperatures. Stopping climate change is only possible when the global community will work together. Mr. Trump said during last year's presidential election campaign that he would take the step to help his country's oil and coal industries.


Carbon tax on fossil fuel

According to a recent Reuters news, Bangladesh will introduce carbon tax on fuel from this June. The news of imposing carbon tax has drawn mixed reactions from the people. While some businesses and environmental groups have welcomed the plan, some feared adverse effect. Bangladesh has a commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 5.0 per cent in its Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) during COP21 in Paris. According to Paris Climate Agreement, signatory countries must take measures as per their national climate action plan.
